Draw a Circle on a Screenshot in Preview
How to Draw on a Screenshot UPDATED (Dec 10, 2019): This postal service was originally written in 2013 – I used Dragon Naturally Speaking and talked about screenshots. The content is still relevant today and is slowly being updated. Stay tuned!
Back in 2013 when this mail service was originally written, I did a presentation for teachers about using applied science. I used Google Slides and I threw in a couple of marked upwardly screenshots from different web pages showing how to login or access various teacher sites. I thought it was a pretty bones presentation.
Afterward, a couple of teachers came upwardly to me and talked near how impressive the presentation was. I think it was because I put pretty arrows on the screenshots.
A long time agone, I remember adding arrows, circles, and colored rectangles (to block out sensitive information) using Photoshop. This took way longer than I'd care to acknowledge.
So, Windows seven (and after versions) came with a snipping tool that let you take a snapshot of part of your screen and mark it upwards with a pen. I idea this was incredible. You lot could highlight text and hand-draw circles around important stuff earlier you fifty-fifty saved your screenshot. You can also practice this now on iPhones and iPads.
The problem is that my handwriting always looks a little messy.
Then I plant Greenshot and Greenshot is manner ameliorate than the snipping tool in Windows because you can speedily create smashing and professional person looking notes on your screenshots.
Plus, Greenshot is free. (Free for usa to employ, but it costs the developers money to update and improve. If you use it a lot, consider donating. I did.)
Here'south what I still love like near Greenshot:
- Information technology has a simplified merely powerful (AND Gratuitous) graphic editor.
- Way easier to use than Photoshop (and complimentary): You don't take to worry almost multiple layers. Just click the selection tool and you can edit / resize / change your markups.
- PRO TIP: If you right-click on an object, you tin nonetheless move the object upward or down so that it's in front of, or behind other objects.
- ANOTHER PRO TIP: Y'all can save (consign) and load (import) the arrows, text boxes, and other objects you create. Then information technology'southward like shooting fish in a barrel to add identical objects on several different screenshots!
- Super easy to draw circles effectually stuff.
- Super easy to draw arrows. Greenshot remembers your terminal settings and then all of your shapes and mark upward can take the same style.
- And, super easy to add text.
- It'due south easy to highlight text. You lot but draw rectangles with the highlighter tool then yous can highlight text or images.
- Y'all can mistiness out (obfuscate) function of your screenshot to remove sensitive data.
- Add together absurd edge effects like torn paper or drop shadow (or at a basic rectangle.)
- You can ingather your screenshots before you lot save them.
- Y'all can add shadows to all of your arrows, boxes and text to add a professional person feel to your work.
There are other cool options.
- I have it set up so when I striking the impress screen push button, information technology lets me capture a region, but I could also set information technology up so that the impress screen button captures the total screen, a specific application window, or but Net Explorer.
- I use Greenshot to create tutorials (similar this i), so I take it set up to automatically open the screenshot in the paradigm editor, but I could just as easily set the destination to automatically open up in Microsoft Word, upload to dropbox, or just save to my computer.
- I also like how Greenshot gives me a magnifier when I'thousand trying to capture region, then I can make certain that I don't go any unnecessary stuff.
On a Windows machine, you need to discover the "Impress SCREEN" push on your keyboard.
Here'south the DEFAULT SETTING:
- When you blazon this button on you keyboard, information technology takes a snapshot of your estimator screen and saves it to your clipboard.
- If yous go into Microsoft Give-and-take or Google Docs, or some plan, you can paste the screenshot into your certificate. (The keyboard shortcut is CTRL Five)
I don't use the default screenshot settings on my windows laptop.
- Instead, I install Greenshot because I become more options and features (AND virtually importantly, OBJECTS that I tin can movement on. It doesn't get permanently painted onto the screenshot until I relieve it as a JPEG or PNG paradigm.)
How to write and highlight screenshots – PRO TIP #one:
Students would ask me how to take a screenshot on our Windows laptops (which is different from a Chromebook), and I would tell them nearly Greenshot which was complimentary software.
And then, inevitably, the question would come up and students would know where the print-screen push button is, and I would accept to show them on a keyboard.

How to write and highlight screenshots – PRO TIP #2:
My favourite role of Greenshot is that yous tin relieve your arrows, text boxes and other stuff to your computer and and so load them up later on to use with a dissimilar screenshot!
How to add an arrow on snipping using Greenshot
Super easy. In one case y'all've installed Greenshot, when you hit the Impress SCREEN push button, it will open upward a cantankerous hair and you can select the part of the screen to "snip"

I and so open the image in the Greenshot Editor. On the left tool bar, you tin can easily…
- Add pretty arrows to your snipped screenshot
- Add boxes or text boxes to annotate your screenshot
- Blur out and pixelate (obfuscate) sensitive information on the screenshot.

The downside of Greenshot:
For me, the biggest downside of the gratis Greenshot editor is that right now, you can't zoom / magnify or fit-to-window large images. I believe this is on the feature request list, but it'due south a headache when y'all endeavor to add text boxes to big screenshots.
Here's an example. I took a few photos of different keyboards in my business firm to bear witness where the "print screen" button is located. When I opened it in Greenshot, y'all couldn't encounter the whole keyboard because the iPhone photo was likewise large.
(By the way, the fashion I got that screenshot of the original entire keyboard photograph was to open up the huge 4032 x 3024 iphone photo on my computer, and and so screenshot the photograph. (And so I pasted it into the Greenshot editor and information technology just treats it like another object. Cool, huh?)

How could you use screen capture software (in the classroom or across)?
Allow'southward say you want to showcase student work.
- If you are pupil handin work electronically, you just open up the certificate of Google Docs, take a screenshot, and you tin can commencement highlight or underlined text. You can also blur out the educatee name or annihilation else that you don't want the class to see.
- If the piece of work is on paper, just snap a photo of the handwritten work using your phone. Upload the prototype to dropbox. Open the file on your computer and take a screenshot of the picture to get into Greenshot.
If you're going to the computer lab, yous could take a screenshot of the website that you lot want students to go to, and highlight or brand jot notes directly onto the screenshot.
- That way, students have a visual reminder of what to practice.
- Some of your students (with or without learning disabilities) will miss instructions the first time.
- Now, after your washed walking students through what they have to do, you tin can put on the calculator projector, a marked upwards screenshot reminding students what to practice.
If you lot teach art class, y'all could snap a photo of student work or your teacher example, and markup important features that y'all desire them to know.
If you lot teach in the science lab, you could snap a photo of equipment and so add arrows to the screenshot to show important safety features.
