How Long Can a Canon Powershot G5x Record on Continuous Recording

G5X audio quality issues

G5X audio quality issues

Just bought this camera and getting to grips with what it can do. This was to replace my Panasonic FZ200 that had very good quality audio as well as video but which started to have mechanical problems.

For more serious work photography I use my DSLR but like to have an out & about camera for holidays, general outdoors reference photos etc. that would also be smaller than the FZ200. I don't take a lot of video but any that I do take I would like to have reasonable quality sound as per the FZ200.

However, when recording video the sound quality seems quite substandard compared to the previous camera. I realise it has just two tiny mikes tucked into the top of the body that plainly aren't hi-fi units but the Pan. speakers weren't either but at least its sounds were smooth and stable.

The Canon's audio sounds like a very poor quality .mp3 file with a swirling and swishing effect - almost like a warbly tape from way back in the dark ages. I've heard similar results when using software to remove the vocals from recorded songs and that happens where some of the frequencies have been removed - hence the swishing sounds that result as the frequencies cut in and out.

I've turned off the wind filter, thinking that may be reducing or affecting the quality but no change.

Any suggestions?

I should add I've set PAL video quality at the best quality level.

Re: G5X audio quality issues

Nobody have any ideas? I've seen the G7X threads but they're not dealing with this specific issue.

Re: G5X audio quality issues

This seems to be getting no response, so can I ask if anyone here owns the same camera and can tell me if their movie audio quality's the same or is it just my camera and I need to do something about it?

If it's just a 'feature' of the camera I'll know there's nothing to be done other than just use it for stills. I don't take a lot of movie footage but it would be nice to know I can without having to record audio separately on my Tascam unit and join them up later in Audacity or other such software.

Do not forget this camera is an offshoot of the G7X, with similar basic properties. Unfortunately as I myself as G7X owner am all the more aware of, are the deficiencies the G7X has in the audio department. In earlier post its lower quality and the registration of sounds from the mechanics (stabilisation, focussing and zooming) at lower ambient sound levels were highlighted by many. Furthermore, the sensitivity to wind effects means I will never switch the windfilter off. Still despite this filter switched on, I have to reduce the sound level in post strongly and often add music to my video's taken with the G7X. I suggest you do the same or change to another camera. So this is not the response you were hoping for, but a response nonetheless

PS If video is of second concern to you, you are in luck. For me it comes prime, my wife takes most of the pictures I produce long holiday video's all the time....

Thanks for your reply - I was beginning to wonder if it was just me having the issues with the G5X, so user error rather than camera foibles (could still be the case, of course!). I read various G7X threads discussing audio noise interference by the camera itself but I don't think the G5X seems to suffer the same problems. Zooming in/out is quiet and I'm not getting any mechanical audio interference from IS or focus noises - just the slight swishy/swirly sounds.

If I talk quietly whilst filming my voice sounds stable and if I point the camera directly at a specific sound source a little further off, the quality of audio's OK but as I pan away from that prominent sound source, it starts to swish and swirl again. Not sure distance from sound source should be a factor but who knows?

Re: G5X audio quality issues

I took video from my front door as it was raining. In essence, the sound seemed OK but when I zoom in, there's no mechanical noise as such but instead the ambient sounds are muffled (and swirly) whilst zooming. Stop at max zoom and the sounds become clear again.

Zoom back out and there's some muffling of the sounds but less so as max wide angle is achieved and all returns to normal levels when I stop zooming.

This was with attenuator and wind filter switched to Auto.

Finally managed to upload a short sample video - see the thread above.

This suggests they did not solve the mechanical problem as such at Canon, but disguised them by attenuating the spurious sounds coming from the mechanics during zoom. Smart move, but it is not any different from what I am doing myself in video postprocessing. I rather keep in control of this

I think I'll just have to work on fixed distance video pieces with no zooming - either that or zoom as usual but delete the audio later and blend it with audio taken on my Tascam recorder at the same time.

It just irks that I should have to consider doing all this when my previous Pan. FZ200 had no audio issues at all and the video quality was fine as well - and a much cheaper camera to boot.

I'm not looking for miracles but do expect a camera that costs considerably more than the FZ200 to at least be on a par with or perform better than the Panasonic but video is the one area that is sub standard in comparison. Or at least its audio quality certainly falls short.

You've presumably played my brief video clip and with the best will in the world, that muffling and swirling of the audio is just unacceptable. Better not to have the video option at all rather than this.

I see from your footnote that you have the same camera so are you saying you're happy with its video performance? I've not heard another camera's recorded sound that was so poor and I'm a tad peeved to say the least.

My first Canon that came before the G7X, the very compact IXUS 300HS is also quite noisy when zooming, but the stabilisation and focussing are quieter. However over the years this camera, now used by my wife has become noisier. Since she only uses it for taking pictures we can live with it.

All in all I've come to the conclusion only external microphones offer a real soution to wind and mechanical sounds from most camera's, maybe some Panasonic and Sony types excepted.  Note that manufacturers of compact camera's with video capabilities often restrict zooming speed in video mode, yet another method for disguishing the spurious sound effects with inbuilt microphones

Re: G5X audio quality issues

I'm not sure what the cause is, but my g7x has a problem with very loud sounds, for example a concert up close to the speakers. The sound is muffled... Not sure if this is a cutting of decibals to eliminate clipping, or what, but it's a bit crap.
